What is FSSAI Modification ?

FSSAI Modification is the process of updating your existing food license when your business details change. If you change your business name, address, or food categories, you must legally modify your license to stay compliant and avoid penalties.

Processes of FSSAI Modification ?

The modification type depends on your business size and turnover:

Basic Registration Modification For small businesses (turnover up to ₹12 lakh). This is a simple update for petty retailers or home kitchens changing basic details like a shop name or contact info.
State License Modification For medium businesses (turnover ₹12 lakh – ₹20 crore). Required for restaurants or local units shifting locations or adding new food items to their production.
Central License Modification For large businesses (turnover above ₹20 crore or import/export). Necessary for major corporate changes, moving a head office, or expanding operations across states.

Who Can Apply for FSSAI Modification?

As per the latest Notice issued from FSSAI FoSCoS authority, only selected categories of FBOs can now apply for a Modification. They are namely:

Any Registered Food Business Operator
Food Manufacturers
Food Processing units

Food Repackers
Food Re-labellers
Food Distributors

Required Documents for FSSAI Modification

Resubmission of all the Documents submitted at the time of FSSAI License Application
A statement notifying the Changes for which the Modification request has been filed
Proper Evidence of Change in the Food Business

Points to be Remembered

The concerned FBO can select a single Modification Category at a time in the FSSAI Modification process, as regulated by the Food Licensing authority
Food Manufacturers/Processors who have already obtained a Food License but in a wrong category, are required to get their License Modified
For adding a new business, change of business address, change in contact details, or change in the product category – an FBO is requisite to file for FSSAI License Modification
The FSSAI Designated Officer (D.O.) is responsible to scrutinize the Modification Application and the D.O. may seek any clarification from the FBO. The query is needed to be responded within the next 30 days
