GST E-Way Bill

What is GST E-Way Bill ?

An E-Way Bill is a mandatory electronic document generated on the GST portal to track the movement of goods. It serves as evidence that the goods being transported comply with tax laws. The bill must be generated before the movement begins and must be carried by the transporter (physically or digitally) along with the tax invoice.

Threshold Limits

The requirement to generate an E-Way Bill depends on the Consignment Value (Value of goods + GST).

  • Interstate (Between States): Mandatory if the value exceeds ₹50,000. This limit is uniform across India.

  • Intrastate (Within a State): Many states have increased their local limits to reduce the burden on traders. Common 2026 thresholds include:

    • ₹1,00,000: Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, and Punjab.

    • ₹2,00,000: Rajasthan (specifically for intra-city movement).

    • ₹50,000: Karnataka, Gujarat, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (Standard limit).

Crucial 2026 Rule: You cannot generate an E-Way Bill for an invoice, Bill of Supply, or Delivery Challan that is more than 180 days old.

Mandatory 2026 Compliance: MFA

As of April 1, 2025, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is mandatory for all taxpayers. Accessing the E-Way Bill portal (ewaybillgst.gov.in) now requires a username/password plus an OTP sent to your registered mobile number or the Sandes app to prevent unauthorized access.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

Transporting goods without a valid E-Way Bill is a serious offense in 2026:

  1. Monetary Penalty: ₹10,000 or the amount of tax sought to be evaded, whichever is higher.

  2. Detention & Seizure: The vehicle and goods can be detained. To release them, the owner typically must pay 200% of the tax payable (up from 100% in earlier years).

  3. System Blocking: If you fail to file GSTR-3B for two consecutive months, the system will automatically block your GSTIN from generating any new E-Way Bills.
