Import Export Code Modification

What isImport Export Code Modification ?

Import Export Code (IEC) Modification is the formal process of updating your existing 10-digit business identification number when your company’s details change. Although an IEC is valid for a lifetime, the government requires that the information linked to it—such as your office address, bank accounts, or list of directors—always remains current to ensure smooth customs clearance.

Types of Import Export Code Modification ?

Modifications are generally categorized into these three essential updates:

  1. Mandatory Annual Updation Even if your business details haven’t changed, all IEC holders must confirm their profile on the DGFT portal every year between April and June. This is a free process that keeps your code active and prevents it from being deactivated by the government.

  2. Core Business Detail Changes This modification is required if you change your Company Name, Registered Office Address, or PAN details. These changes usually require supporting documents like a new rent agreement or an updated GST certificate and involve a small government fee.

  3. Director, Partner, or Bank Updates You must modify your IEC if there is a change in the Proprietor, Partners, or Directors of the firm. Additionally, if you switch to a new bank account for international transactions, the new details must be validated through the NPCI system on the DGFT portal to ensure your export benefits are processed correctly.
