Import Export Code

What is Import Export Code ?

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a unique 10-digit identification number issued by the DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade). It is mandatory for any business or individual in India looking to import or export goods and services. Without an IEC, you cannot engage in international trade or clear shipments through customs.

Types of Import Export Code ?

The process of obtaining and using an IEC involves a few key steps to ensure your business is globally ready:

  1. Online Application & Documentation The first step is applying via the official DGFT portal. You will need basic documents like your PAN card, bank details (canceled cheque), and business address proof. The process is now fully digital and user-friendly.

  2. Verification and Issuance Once the application is submitted and the fee is paid, the authorities verify your details. Since the system is automated, the IEC Certificate is usually issued instantly or within a few days, allowing you to start trading immediately.

  3. Customs and Bank Integration Once you have your IEC, it is automatically linked with the Customs department (ICEGATE) and your bank. This allows you to claim government export benefits, handle foreign currency transactions, and clear your goods at ports without hassle.
